These Past Three Weeks

I can't believe I haven't written any blogs these past three weeks. Time was short, and filled with work, as this was the shortest time between two trips ever, as far as I can tell.

One of my projects of those weeks was to make a new presentation to take to Europe with me. And this is the result:

And this is the German version:

Kitchen Area

In the beginning of the month, the outdoor tiles were finally delivered for the area between our first two houses where our kitchen was supposed to move. However, they ran out and had to wait for another delivery. This picture shows the first half of the area done.

February 17 was the first day our new kitchen area was in operation. Except for our new gas burners... first we had to adjust them to local gas bottles, and then we had to have special pots made with flat bottoms to put on them. So we're still waiting to use them.

As for the rest of construction, this is the area where the new apartment is being built. It costs $11,000. Construction has not started as we have to wait for the money to come in. It has to be done and ready to move in by May 5th though!

New Family Pictures

It was high time for new family pictures - especially after the kids received these beautiful T-shirts from Covenant of Faith church in Colorado Springs.

These are all of us living on our base. The following picture shows our 30 sponsored kids - though a few of them are missing.

I'm also happy about these new pictures of Paul and of Rosalie who is one of our three cooks.

Church Services

I preached two Saturdays in a row, and I introduced some changes, and preached messages I had had on my heart for a long time.

This was the first Saturday. I'm so happy about the great freedom the ladies have found in worship.

I preached on the body of Christ, church, and how we're one unit, where each one affects the whole body. I had a few illustrations.

I built a house of bricks, since we're all stones in this building with Jesus as the corner stone.

I also had the kids link arms and show how everyone is affected when one is injured, and that the others can carry that one and still keep going.

That service I announced that we would do a potluck the following Saturday. We've never done that before, and so I was curious to see whether it would work. We ourselves cooked lots of food for all the (street) kids that would show up. Thankfully a few other ladies also brought food.

And so it was a great success. We did the service at noon instead of 3 pm, and did the service once everyone was done eating.

That week the subject was tithing & giving. I just love how it turned out! I gave a simply, clear explanation of each, it was awesome. Again I used several illustrations. The following week, our offering tripled.

And in closing, two pictures of Jonathan. The first one shows him in front of the TV set - asleep while watching a movie. The second one shows him with his late Christmas gift from his sponsor that had just arrived in the mail.

Leaving The Cold

Yesterday was packing day. I returned to the hotel on Sunday, so I would have all the space necessary to pack my several suitcases. I did not progress as much as planned on Sunday. Monday morning I made good progress, and just after noon I had a lunch appointment with a family from the church here.

After that appointment, I met with the pastor one last time, which was good. We discussed different things. Then I returned to the hotel to do serious packing. I worked non-stop for 4 hours - a great workout - and got my 3 suitcases pretty much packed. By the time I went to bed at 1 am, most was done. It would be another short night.

Everyone was telling me that lots of snow was coming over night, and the road conditions would be pretty bad. So we added another half hour to have sufficient time to make it to the airport.

And so I got up early, finished packing, and was ready for pickup before 9 am. It sure seemed like I had a lot of stuff; which is why I had ask for help at the airport, rather than returning the car to the airport and having to somehow move all the stuff to the check-in counter.

It was bitter cold outside - minus 20 C, i.e. minus 4 F. My friend Mary arrived first, and I put the stuff to stay into her car. A few minutes later Betti arrived, and all the stuff going with me was loaded into her car. Then Mary got into the car with me, and off we went to the local rental agency to return my car. I was so cold!

Unfortunately we had a hard time finding the location. I thought Mary knew, and so I had packed my GPS. We asked for directions and called Hertz, and finally found it. I returned the car, and off we went towards Denver.

Betti didn't have any windshield wiper fluid in her car which proved to be a problem. We had to stop twice at a gas station so she could see again; good thing that we had plenty of time.

Betti (new H2TNI secretary) and Mary (H2TNI intercessor) didn't really know each other yet, but they hit it off and had a great time talking and getting to know each other.

At 11:30 am we arrived at the airport. I had to pay for a cart and loaded my stuff onto it. Then Mary accompanied me to check-in, just in case. The airline agents had never heard of Bamako, but it worked out more or less - escept that they did not give me a window seat as requested. For some reason I had not been able to check in online or change my seats. And I had to pay $200 for the third suitcase - which had been anticipated.

So I said my good-byes, and went through security. I still had plenty of time until boarding and set down at my gate reading. The flight from Denver to Colorado was several hours, and so I was disappointed when they did not have individual TV screens. I ended up finishing my book.

The weather in Atlanta was much better.

To be continued.

Extreme Sowing & Reaping

What a remarkable morning!

After a short night, I had a very hard time getting up at 7 am. I packed up, had some tea and made sandwiches to take with me, and then said my good-byes to my precious friends. It was just after 7:30 am when I started on my long drive from Greeley to Colorado Springs. My friend had checked the weather, and so I knew I had snow ahead. It would take longer than the predicted 2h 15m, but I did have 3 hours until the service started.

I listened to teaching CDs the whole trip, and was actually pretty awake. Greeley is an hour north of Denver, and Colorado Springs an hour south of Denver. As I was approaching Denver, the highway was more and more covered with snow. I was surprised why they weren't clearing it. It started snowing as I was leaving Denver, and as you go to a higher altitude, it snowed even more there. I was going as fast as I could. At one point a police car with lights on slowed down all the traffic, having us follow behind him.

As I approached Colorado Springs, it was still snowing but the sun was also coming out. The roads were still pretty bad. I made my way to church where I arrived just after 10 am. It had taken me 2h 30m to get there.

I was very tired. I got the box with my brochures out and carried it into church to set up my stuff. It was good to see familiar faces, and I talked with a few people. I also gave them the pictures to run while I was sharing. At 10:30 am the service started.

During the time of worship I was very tired and simply rested in His presence. Then the pastor gave the announcements, and did the offering.

I had already written out a H2TNI check for $200 yesterday, so I wouldn't have to write it during the service. As they were preparing the service, I was thinking of believing for a ten-fold return on this money. I don't even think of returns when I give usually! Then the pastor prayed, and he prayed for a 100-fold return. I reflected on that and wondered if I'd have the faith to believe for that. My faith was small as a mustard seed, but I said YES to believing for that.

Then the pastor called me up to share. I should have preached on Tuesday, but it was canceled due to the extreme cold of minus 35 C/F. So I had a few minutes to give an update this morning.

I was tired, yes, but I had just spent time worshiping God, and He gave me the right words to speak. I did not know how many minutes I had available to me - probably another God-thing. Knowing a good number of people did not know me yet, I just gave a quick overview of my story. I usually forget to talk about our financial needs when I share, but today I knew I had to tell them about the $9,000 we need by the end of the month for additional solar panels. And so I did not forget.

I told them how hot it is, and how hard to sleep, and the great need for more electricity that we have. For some unexplainable reason I stayed on this subject for a while, when someone suddenly shouted that he would give the $9,000. I was shocked, and was probably not the only one who was. I was speechless. And then people started clapping.

I did not know what else to add to that, so I simply told everyone about my brochure and email newsletter, and showed them the toy car the kids had made. The pastor said that the church would buy it for $100.

Then he went on to preach. After the closing prayer, someone came up, saying that this car was definitely worth more than just $100, and so he auctioned it off for $300!

Then the man who had given the $9,000 asked me about the house under construction as I had mentioned that we don't have room for any more kids at this point. So I told him that we still needed $36,000 to finish it. Then he went off.

Suddenly I hear the pastor talk using the mic. He said that a challenge had been given, that if the church would raise $26,000, then this man would give the remaining $10,000. WOW! Amazing! They took up the challenge, saying their goal was to raise it by the end of May. I was speechless.

As this man, the pastor and I was talking, and he talked about sending the $19,000, he said that he would round it up to $20,000. It took several hours before it hit me - I had given $200, and just minutes later God had returned a 100-fold. He had taken my little mustard seed of faith, and it had born immediate fruit. Once more I was speechless. What if I had not dared to believe?

In a few months our third building (housing for me and for guests, freeing up the space I currently use) will be finished. And the book is coming out in less than two months. Two things that had to happened before the fulfillment of a wonderful promise I have from God. Hallelujah!

I went out to lunch with my friend and intercessor - to my favorite restaurant (no, not Applebee's - that's my favorite affordable restaurant). It was 2:30 pm before we left the church. We sat at the restaurant for 3 hours talking and having a good time.

Then I put my GPS on and went to my hotel once again. I had to check back in after 2 nights away. The receptionist was nice and helped me a little with all my luggage. The church had 2 suitcases there that should have been taken to Mali last year, and so I'm gonna go through them and take as much with me as I possibly can. That's why I'm thankful the hotel room is pretty big. I started unpacking and unwrapping - including all the stuff I had bought at the dollar store - and spreading out everything in such a way that I can pack intelligently tomorrow. I enjoyed my evening "alone at home", doing office work, catching up on stuff and watching American TV (but not the Super Bowl).

It would have been wise to go to bed earlier, but there was simply too much to do. Why does time pass so fast?

Turn Of Events

I was preparing for the service tonight, when the news reached me that the meeting was canceled. I was disappointed as I had been looking forward to ministering in CO for the first time.

My room was really cold when I woke up and I noticed that the door was not totally closed. The rooms here are like apartments, and so the outside is right outside my room. I turned the heat up more, but it warms up very slowly. It was minus 25 C outside, i.e. minus 15 F. With the wind outside, it was actually like minus 37 C (minus 35 F). And I had to go outside to go to the breakfast room.

After I was informed of the cancelation, I tried to find something productive to find with my day, but the people I needed weren't available. I saw that the hotel offered a free week-pass to 24h Fitness, and so I seized the opportunity. The gym was just 3 minutes away. I was glad that the car started without problems. When I got out at the gym, the wind blew hard, and my hands immediately turned red - and I was only outside for a minute or so! When I entered the gym, I could barely feel my hands. I put my gloves on when I left the gym.

I had a great one-hour workout. I wanted to buy some groceries but realized I didn't have any money on me. So I returned to the hotel, picked up some money, and returned to the store next to the gym. In fact, I had to ask someone whether it was a grocery store as I had never seen that name before (King's Soopers or so).

I was glad when I returned to the hotel, not planning to leave again. The whole city was shutting down, with every activity in the city canceled for the night. I was amazed, though, that only the cold would create such a response. If there was a snow storm, I'd understand. But it's only cold, the roads are good, the sky is clear, the car is warm, and the place you go to is warm. So what is the problem???

Well, I was happy to find one half of my room warming up, and so I moved to that half. The cold was coming in the windows and the door in the other half, and it never went above 66 F.

And so I've been enjoying my unexpected day off with watching TV and being on the computer.
